| Over-The-Air (OTA) Service Provisioning and Parameter Activation
The adoption of data services can be greatly enhanced by automating the setting or provisioning of the handset configuration parameters.
Today, provisioning of new handsets into a CDMA network is complex and activating mobile data services, such as WAP, e-mail and MMS, requires users to manually configure the handset with the appropriate settings.
CallUp´s Over the Air Service Provisioning (OTASP) and Over the Air Parameter Activation (OTAPA) smooth the provisioning of new subscribers in the network and provide means to update the parameters in their devices over the air.
Handsets can be sold, configured and immediately activated in any place such as kiosks, supermarkets, airports, etc. Handsets can be updated without having to contact the users or bring them to points of service.
Architecture
CallUp Over the air Provisioning (OTP) is an OTAF (OTA Function) platform that enables CDMA mobile operators to provision and update handsets remotely on behalf of subscribers by formatting the relevant OTA messages carried over SMS, and sending them to the targeted handsets via SS7.
CallUp OTP includes two services:
· Over-the-Air Service Provisioning (OTASP) for remote activation of devices
· Over-the-Air-Parameter Administration (OTAPA) for remote updating of devices (roaming tables) - requires no subscriber intervention
Flow
Over-the-Air provisioning can be initiated in two ways: by the network or by the user.
Network initiated session: OTAPA session starts when the network sends an OTAPA request command.
User initiated session: OTASP session starts when a user manually enters the activation code for the selected system. Non provisioned devices are hot-linked to special service numbers. Secure protocols are used to install keys.
Features
Using this Over-the-Air technology, the following features can be downloaded to a mobile device:
a. Number Assignment Module (NAM), Mobile Directly Number (MDN)
b. A–Key for session authentication
c. System Selection for Preferred Roaming List (PRL)
d. Preferred User Zone List (PUZL)
e. 3G Packet Data (3GPD) operational parameters
Benefits
-
Enhanced user experience and Increased customer satisfaction
-
Reduced costs: No need to train staff to undertake activation Procedures at point-of-sale
-
Reduce device activation procedure time
-
Operators have a number of benefits such as avoiding pre-programming of handsets, reducing the number of resources allocated to service provisioning etc.
